THE FUTURE OF HEIDELBERG

Despite the success Tyree Guyton has had with The Heidelberg Project, reports say it will be dismantled in the coming years. Guyton feels that he has done all he can with this particular project over the last 30 years in its current state. Dismantling the current site will give him the freedom to explore new alternatives with the space.

Currently, his plan is to turn the existing Heidelberg into a new project called Heidelberg 3.0. This new project will usher in a new era of art in the area. Instead of the site being controlled by a single artist, it will be turned into an ‘arts-infused community’ (Frank, 2016).

The process of making this a more accessible community will not happen immediately. It will take the next two or three years to deconstruct the current development, and then construct new installations. What exactly an arts-infused community will look like is still up for question, but Guyton wants to make sure it turns out to be something as impactful as what he created 30 years ago. As Guyton is now 60 years old, this new project will allow him to pass the torch to a new generation of artists and eventually retire (Stryker, 2016).

So, if you have never seen this amazingly creative landscape in person, now is the time to check it out, before all that remains are photographs that cannot do its surreal nature justice.
